While dad was in hospital I realised just how many people were lying in their hospital beds, day after day, week after week. Some were dying. Some had to stabilise before treatment. Some just didn’t have anywhere suitable to go home to, so in hospital they stayed.

It didn’t take a lot to work out that these people sometimes had maybe one visitor a day, some only once a week if their family lived in the country. There are a lot of lonely, sad people in hospital!

Talking to the nurses and to nurse friends, it became pretty clear that this loneliness often hampered recovery. If you have ever had a lonely moment in your life, you know how sad and despairing you feel and you will know that it’s hard to look forward to things.

I want to throw a little bit of sunshine, love and happiness in the lives of these people. And you can help!

Introducing… Little Bunches of Love

The idea is simple. It doesn’t take much time, and the best bit is all that you require you would have at home! Let’s spread some joy!

Find a washed, label free jar. Small is good.

Pick some flowers from your garden. Make sure they aren’t overly fragrant and are bug free! If you don’t have flowers in your garden, buying a bunch and making your own jar posy will work. Or alternately, if you feel totally inept in making a posy, ask your local florist for a small bunch. Bring your jar, you’ll be surprised at how little it will cost.

Find some foliage. Think outside the square. Tiny little leaves work well, as do herbs and eucalyptus nuts. My favourite foliage is sage, rosemary, olive leaves and gum leaves.

Print out the tag, (which you can find below) so that we can spread the word. Cut it out, punch a hole and write a message on the back on the tag. There are two tags to choose from. One generic and one scriptural.

In your hand, make a small posy that will fit in your jar. Best to alternate flowers with foliage, going in a circular direction. Finish with a border of foliage. Cut off the stems so that they ‘sit’ in the jar nicely. Tie an elastic band around the stems to keep it all together.

Pop a little bit of water (you can add more later when you get to your destination.. take a water bottle!) in the jar and add your posy.

Tie your tag to the jar with a length of ribbon.

The next time you are heading out, pop the jars in the car securely (A small crate works well to keep them from moving all over the place) and drop off at your chosen hospital, old age home or neighbour that you know needs a little cheering up.

If you are going into a hospital or nursing facility, check with the nurses or admin staff to see if it’s ok to pass onto someone. Barging in on a random room is a breech of privacy and down-right rude. Please don’t be rude! You might never meet the person your posy goes to, that’s ok. Men like flowers too! You could even make a ‘blokey’ posy every now and then!

If you are on social media, take a pic of your “Little Bunch of Love” and spread the word with the hashtag #littlebunchesoflove.
