I want to spend more time with God

How many times have you said this to yourself?

How many times have you started off a year saying that you want to get better at bible study?

How many days have passed by with missed opportunities?

How long are you going to put it off?

This was me. I was too busy with life to change anything. Kids, family, home, church commitments, hobbies all got in the way. I could make time for my favourite cooking show and I could make time to meet a friend for coffee. I could make time to whip up a quilt or plant another punnet. Days, months and years whizzed by and I didn’t change a thing. I didn’t have time for God and when you get to the heart of it, I didn’t want to either.

I am thankful that I have a long-suffering and gracious Father, because I would have run out of patience with me a long time ago!

Yes, I read my Bible. I went to Bible study club. I read good Christian books. I ticked all the boxes.

But I didn’t dig or explore, I hardly ever applied God’s Word to my life and  I was very good at skimming the surface and doing only the bare minimum.

Things changed when I read about Bible Journaling on a few blogs. I started by writing in an old notebook. It was only wobbly baby steps, but at least, I was doing something and it was in the right direction. The most important bit was that I had started.

A year on and I look back on my notebooks with a lot of joy. There were days where life was too busy to pick up my journal and bible yet overall, what I have written, the things I have learned have been amazing. It’s been life changing.

I’ve been through about half of the Psalms, the first bit of Matthew, completed Ruth, Zechariah and Hebrews just to name a few. I’m back into the Psalms for another month and today was Psalm 50.

It’s a mighty Psalm about a mighty, righteous, perfect and just God.

“The mighty one, God the Lord speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.”

In the Psalm, God the judge, prosecutor and jury all rolled into one, summons his court. He confronts those who are the formalists, then the hypocrites and concludes with a call to worship. He reminds us, like the hypocrites that when we are further away from God we slip further into sin. On the other end of the spectrum, in the corner of the formalists,  we could spend all our time in worship, doing things, ticking the boxes, but do you know what God wants more? That we love Him, and loving someone means that we know them, intimately.

Hosea 6:6 “For I desire steadfast love, and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. “

So, as God reminded me today, seek him! Get to know our Father and write it on your hearts.
